Have you heard of such a scam

I have a dropship account with http://www.arb-wholesale.co.uk for one of my websites, but decided rather than spend hours uploading products i thought i wouyld take their offer of a set up website + hosting. if you pay annually then they will give you a free domain, but paying months you will have to regsiter a domain at 9.98.
they use http://www.ordering.onlinewebtraders.com to setup and host the sites and this states

"12 months Online Web Traders Hosting - There is a one-off domain name payment of 9.98 as advertised.

7.95 Per Month"

so i sent them this

Quote:
"I as a member of ARB wholesale i am interested in the monthly website but i dont need a domain name or SSL cert as i already have these <my domomain>"
their first reply was

Quote:
"Hi Terry,

I am afraid we do not offer this package to be hosted elsewhere other than via our own system, this is due to the fact that we use secure servers and can manage the sites product feeds more efficiently using our own in house hosting. We also do not offer a service that can be used to add the products to your own website that has not been purchased through our system and receive updates automatically."
my reply to this was

Quote:
"Hi

Ive not asked this to be hosted elswhere the website would be purchased through http://www.arb-wholesale.co.uk and i assume its their product feeds you use on the sites.

what i was saying is you state There is a one-off domain name payment of 9.98 is added to the first month for a domain and i can purchase an ssl certificate. but as i already have a domain and an ssl i do not need to purchase a domain. this domain can be pointed to your nameservers very easily and the ssl reissued."
so this is the last reply
Quote:
"Hi Terry,

You can use your own domain name however you will still be charged a domain name fee if you have opted to pay monthly, as the domain name will still need to be added to our servers. This fee is not charged when paying yearly."
so basically even if you dont register a domain they will still charge you the domain registration fee

something sounds dodgy there....

why won't they let you leave your domain where it is and point to their nameservers?

if you want to move the domain to them then it's pretty standard to be charged to move it (this usually goes to the domain registry as they charge to change the required details, but add's another year to your domain registration period)

but changing the nameservers to theirs is something you can do yourself and doesn't cost anybody anything (that's what i would have suggested for you to do)

this is what i told them and to transfer a .co.uk domain is free.

but when i toild them that i already had a domain along with an SSL so did not need to pay for a new domain this is when they changed to say that it was not to reg a domain but to place the domain on their servers.

since i explained to them in detail on how domain/DNS/Nameservers work from a domains registrar they have not replied to me.

At the end of the day, it is less than a tenner.

If you wan't your life to be more simple and save the time uploading and adding your own products, then pay it.

You are going to save yourself plenty of hours, so a tenner is worth it.
I personally think it is such a small amount to be so picky about, if it is to save you work - Pay it.
Businesses make money, you should know just as much as we all do, it is what the boys of the web do, make bucks.

Virgin want setup fees from me to setup broadband in my new home, they can probably do it free but hey, they find any way to add that charge.

It is reality no matter what it is for, they wan't and will get it.

Basically, they're charging you to use their DNS and the internal routing. While it may not be something that many places do, I have seen some do this.

Looks like if you want to use their service, you have to bite the bullet and follow the process they have in place for using their services. Since it's not something you can host on your own, you're pretty much at their mercy on things.

its the principle that at first it was to pay for domain registration if you pay monthly as yearly the domain is free and NO 10 is extra. then when i stated i had my own domain so did not need to register a domain then they changed to say then its to pay to place the domain on their servers.

Unfortunately, principle doesn't always win out. There are a ton of folks out there who could care less about ethics. And the same applies for many businesses - you either do it their way or the highway.

In that case, why not switch to another service where you get more freedom?
