Has anyone here ever gotten a new client who wanted you to help install something on their site either illegal (in a bad way) or just a plain cracked version of something? We had one come in last evening and I looked at the ticket and actually thought to myself if the person was serious or not. Guess its that time of year for the crazies!

Indeed, I have had it a good few times.

I kind of laughed and told them no!

Interesting. Of course it is something you cannot help the client to set up. I am curious as to how you let him understand that it's a bit of a stup*d request?

Nothing illeagal that I can remember, although we have had a few queries of people wanting to host specific adult themed content and wanting to know if they are allowed to host or not!

i recently had 1 client open a ticket and ask me if i knew were they could get a nulled copy of WHMCS.

I simply told them to go back and read our TOS about hosting nulled software.

24 hours later this client handed in a cancellation request

I did have a client ask me once to download some pirated software for him because his connection was too slow - like that's going to happen.

I think it honestly takes years of experience, talent and a little luck to be able to tell a client why they have a silly request. It is just as much fun when you are doing a design job for someone and they want you to use an image of a dancing banana because "it's cool".

Well, unfortunately many people do not understand the importance of the trade and serve marks and do not take the ownership and licensee rights very seriously. I should also say that I'm pretty sure that there are web hosting providers in some countries that use cracked versions of software technologies to create virtual accounts or VMs.

Same. We have had clients about hosting nulled software as well. Usually catch on pretty quick though.

An IM chat about a dedicated server I had a couple months ago:

Him: Can I host booters?
Me: No
Him: Can I send spam?
Me: No
Him: Can I have a /19?
Me: No
Him: Can I get a 12 month contract and then walk away whenever I feel with no consequence?
Me: No

It went on, but you get the idea.....

Now in reality it was rather longer and I was rather more polite but you do wonder about the mess he'll make for whoever ends up renting him a server. Still, at least he was upfront and saved both him and us the hassle of terminating him.

I had one similar live chat, but he was using his own broadband connection and our chat system logged his IP. so with his rather long and clear chat where he wanted to use nulled and illegal software, i reported this to his ISP along with a copy of the chat and his ISP closed down his account
