Think of free hosting as a free taste. These are ideal for people who are thinking about putting up their first website ever. Usually, they don't use up that much space and bandwidth at first. Once they get a hang of things, they would consider a paid hosting service. And the first company they would consider is the same one that offered them the free hosting.

How can free hosting be used this way as most free hosting does not provide cgi/mysql etc. so not much usefull to taste.
best option is to go with paid hosting and if you want toi test out ask if they have a free trial of the plan you are looking at, this way you get an account set up as if you have paid, with everything active for a small period (sometimes a few days or maybe a free months trial)

That's because most people who make their first ever websites uses it for personal blogs. An FTP is good enough. You don't need a database or other functionalities aside from those in the free hosting. But yes, that's all free hostings can do--a playground for designing your own page and display static text and images.

That is one thing that always blows my mind.
It is one thing for a person to use a free host to toy around with web design. Odd since anyone can use localhost all day long.

But the point that blows my mind is these people that are running a business and are too cheap to spring for hosting and a domain.

Like someone already posted it is so cheap these days to get a domain and hosting.
They expect to charge for their services and yet can't muster up the small fee for their own site. I tell people all the time I would avoid any business that can't come up with $10 for a domain and $5 for hosting.

If they are that cheap just imagine the cheap service you will get from them as well.

a prime example of free hosting gone bad (this is from one of the biggest companies in the industry)

Office Live Small Business by a company called Microsoft was discontinued on 30 April 2012 ( this was free hosting) and MS wanted those users to migrate to their MS Office 365

Quote:
Office 365 for small business

Ideal for businesses with 25 or fewer employees that want simplified IT and virtually anywhere access to familiar Office tools, email, conferencing, file sharing, and more cloud productivity services. Just $6 per user/month.
the free Office Live Small Business was designed for small businesses.

So if you cant trust MS to give and keep up free hosting then what chance has a small free hosting provider got.

We provide hosting from £2.99 a month and these get the same support and service as anyone on our £20 a month plan, but as stated if a business cannot afford £3 a month for hosting and £10 a year for a domain then they should not be in business as they must not be making money to cover themselves.

Yeah, that blows my mind too. People will pay eagerly for things of no actual value, but when it comes to a service that will be useful for their business, literary a few dollars more suddenly becomes "too expensive". I just don't get it...

true and this happens with paid hosting too, i had a client who had a dolphin forum that was get large and eating resources, so i suggested they upgrade to their own VPS. the response was too expensive dont have the money (this worked out about £10 more a month to what they were already paying), but they kept buying forum clients to a point that was too much for the server that both us and my DC tried to optimize their site, they still did not want to upgrade to VPS so i have to tell them that if they did not want to upgrade i would have to take their site off the server. So this is what happened, they were given 7 days to backup and take the backup before their site was terminated.

You always get what you pay for If it looks too good to be true then it most likely is, the better option would be to go for a shared hosting plan that is not very expensive.

Using free hosting could be good for new starters who want to build their own website for fun and learning. Although you cannot expect to have the best services , just enough to get you through. But for professionals to carry out their businesses and establishing themselves through their sites, paid hosting are best since it can offer more services and support that you need.

Most free hosting providers also provide premium shared hosting, it just means that anyone who uses their free hosting service (and may decide to upgrade to premium) will use the same company for premium if they are impressed with the service they got from the free hosting service.

Not all free hosting providers are that bad, but really, what can you expect? It is free after all.

You wont find many doing this now. it is too risking for a paid host to also offer free hosting as free hosting attracks spammers etc., which effect the whole server.

a Paid host may offer a few days trial period, but even this is hard to find now

Some free hosts also such as paid may be very good. I think so.

But this is exactly why support for free hosting is worse, because free hosting attract spammers etc and therefore free hosting has less support than their premium hosting, there is still some premium hosting sites which offer free hosting too, but only a vast majority do.

Which in return makes it incredibly important to run the free hosting operation separately from paid hosting. Hosting both on the same machine is a recipe for trouble.

thats why most paid hosts dont do this or wont admit it and run free hosting under a different brand/domain
