I know a while back they stopped offering Minfraud free to WHMCS users, but like me i have this free, but have to pay for the telephone service, if this has gone up in costs to run and maintain then you would just up the cost to use the service and not remove it, but like you say 'We may never know the internals '

Well here is an alternative that we are going to try out.

onverify.com - Demo worked fine. All verification types. Can be set from admin: Phone, SMS, Auto Selection, User Select

Customer can use Auto Selection to receive a SMS or a phone call.

Looks like a promising replacement and you only pay for answered calls, unlike MaxMind which charged you for placing the call regardless if someone answered or not.

Well its actually safer to do manual phone verifications anyway, so its probably better in the long run for most hosts. We use MaxMind but this change shouldn't affect us as we like to speak with each new customer prior to provisioning an order for them.

Manual phone verification can also have it's disadvantages such as delays to accounts being setup, especially when you're getting a fair number of daily signups.

Agreed

Scamers new tactic is to use a disposable voip line anyway so a phone verification is useless, and we have had 2 very recently that I would assume they paid some one who has a clean IP and good phone number to place an order for them.

it was a nice trick but we caught them (client we all ready banned for abuse)
