Just curious

I'm glad someone brought this up, because I have another thread open that addresses the opposite situation.
On my smaller sites, I backup my own stuff whenever I update the site (and I copy down my db's twice a month).
On the bigger sites I pay someone off-site to do backups once to twice a week. It all depends on the size of the site and the intensity of use on the SQL.

You're also right in saying that hosts should really do some backups themselves, but this is seldom done on anything less than reseller or dedicated packages (or so it seems, comments?)...

It is always a good idea to have a backup copy of each version of the entire websites I'm working on. I usually backup my sites before I want to make a significant update and keep backups of all the previous versions of my site(s).

This isn't necessarily true. Many host (such as ourselves) do full backups of all customer sites every night. Something to look for in a host. However there are other options too. Most control panels make it easy to download a backup copy of your site and/or database to your PC with just a few "clicks" (more practical on broadband of course).
If your site is mission critical and you are not capable of comfortable with backing up your own site, some hosts like us also offer services like off-site backups at an extra charge (just in case the datacenter explodes or something).
Nightly backups are not at all uncommon among hosts but are one of the first things a "cheap" host will cut to be able to turn a profit on a $1.95 a month plan...

PS: If you do a lot of "tinkering" with your site and are not an experienced programmer keeping a recent backup on your PC in a different folder is always a good idea...just in case that latest "freeware" script or whatever you added fouls things up when you upload it. Makes it much easier to get your site back to working condition while you go looking for the setting or line of code you missed.

Hmmm... generally I backup all my stuff every night - off network, off server and on server as well. I'm just very security and thoroughness oriented - plus, as other people have said, I'm not one to do things twice

Web Hosts generally do server backups periodically but DO NOT RELY on that. Do your own backups often. Ask your host if they offer a service that will backup your site if you do not want to or know how to deal with such a chore.

Raid is not a backup solution. That is all.

RAID is good for protecting against data loss as a result of hardware failiure, but not due to client error.

Also, what are the legal ramifications of hosting clients sites that you didn't make on your own personal computer?

"Also, what are the legal ramifications of hosting clients sites that you didn't make on your own personal computer?"

What exactly do you mean by this?
