The hosting industry is not going down hill in any way. There are still companies that don't oversell and provide great customer service. It's just making it to where one has to get out there and compete by offering even better service. Good marketing and good service is critical to stay afloat.

There are some good points stated but don't you ever think that even big companies are losing business to some smaller business just because the smaller business offers cheaper hosting?

It's all about value and even though customer service is important, a lot of people will go straight to the cheaper host.

This is true, what about those offering cheap prices along with good services? I think it's a matter of how you play your game plan strategically. It's a revolving door that's open continuously, every day there will be new customers at a hosting company somewhere around the world. You have to decide how you're going to opp against the ones that seem to be getting all of the customers.

Yes, I think even big companies are losing business to some smaller businesses with ultra cheap prices.

Temporarily.

Then about 3/4 of those same folk get back on the find-a-host merry go round, and either they return to the big company or they find another hosting company. I've had clients come to me directly from little fly-by-nights, as well as from Yahoo and Interland. These customers have come to The Living Media because they want better service than they've gotten, they want more personalized help than they've gotten, they want to feel less like a number and more like an individual and valued customer.

Others on this forum have probably experienced similar things.

Quite a few of the larger hosts are in a fierce "who can be cheapest" fight. I doubt that the considerable smaller businesses can play that game more effectively that they do, as economy of scale does play a part in this. Quality of service is what sets the smaller hosts apart from the crowd, if anything.

its just getting started and you are seeing a decetralization of labor and a sepcialization of operations. I think it will continue this way and continue to grow - most companies and people still dont have a website. this is just beginning.

Hosting has just started. Companies which work hard will stay, those who don't, will not.

Just be glad they don't all have MBA's. I for one am thankful that half of my competitors are still living with mum and dad.

I would like to see more educated customers, actually. I've seen way to many horror stories of hosting to rest easy. I can't stand web hosts with flashy websites and insane offers that hold people's data hostage once they start hosting with them.

It's those kind of hosts that make the rest of us look bad. But that's business and there isn't anything we can do but wait for the justice of their ship to sink.

If it actually ever does.

The market is definitely over staturated. it is really tough for medium sizee cos.
There is room for anyone, but it is not going to be easy for sure!

It's merely a matter of business, bad business practices will catch up to you in the end.

As far as the internet is concerned, it may be able to reach around the globe, but we still have language barriers. I rarely see webhosts that offer English/Spanish translations, let alone support.

It's quite possible that there is a huge untouched market, kept away from European/American hosting companies for the simple fact that they can't communicate linguistically.

I have quite a few clients that have a minimal mastery of english, and I have been told the reason they seek the American/UK-English speaking companies is because companies in there native languages are still highly priced.

The "web hosting economy" if you will has not caught up to some countries.

Is the hosting industry over saturated? Sure it is, but so are many other industries. Compitition is good, embrase it and use it to your advantage. There are more and more fly by night hosts out there, usually run by young people with little to no business sense or experience. There's always room for more "quality" hosts.

I agree that there is more hosting companies out there then ever before but feel only about 10% are true hosting companies and not someone trying to make a quick buck and under cutting everyone. We totally got out of hosting for that reason people saying company x is offer the same package for 1/2 the price. We have found alot over sell everything

I think the web hosting industry is one of the more stable internet based businesses around, simply because people need the services. I think most people agree that you need a website, regardless of what kind of business you're in, and because of that, hosting companies are important. There will always be the hosting companies who are just looking for a quick buck, but they don't last long, and that leaves plenty of room for quality hosts.
