Completely up to you regarding the size, but I prefer not to have a 1024x768 banner

Normal sized.

Seems like it to me.. Its just strange that people can't afford 6-7 dollars per year for secure ownership of their online business/site.

you mean you don't have to have your own domain name but yes you do need a domain name...although you could use IP but who would remember it?
