I'm curious to know what sort of tactics people use for SEOing their forums and/or websites? I know things like vBSEO/Zoints and a few programs out there for some CMS, do have SEO modifications. I'm wondering what other programs or simple techniques you use?

That is a good question and the one I would like to learn more about myself.

However, I think the best SEO tactic is to provide good quality content to begin with. Search engine engineers aren't stupid, so sooner or later they would find a way to teach their engine robots to identify material that is flooded against pages that represent quality stuff. Google still does that quite well.

Another thing you can do is link exchange with other forums, build up search keyword relevancy around your site.

I know that at our forum. vBSEO worked well for a couple of months, but then declined in effectiveness. Primarily because so many other forums started to use the hack.

Best,

Here's the secret formula:

Good content + relevant links

Logic is that if you have good content, people will like it and would wanna link to same and thus count towards +ve vote for you. With more +ve votes, you rise higher in the rankings.

Mantra is to have good quality content which interests people.

I also suppose the more backlinks = more PR and better chance of getting shown on the search engines? SEO is still a subject, which I'm really trying to understand more of, since I've never really cared for SEO in the past. These days however, SEO seems to be every important for people who want successful sites and forums.

Unique contents and more back links are very important. But make site for users not for search engines.

The best way is to pay a SEO professional to do it for you. But it could get a bit expensive.

You could, but these days you can also buy SEO products. Also at the same time, you can also do some research and do some basic SEO. Then again, I also know some sucessful places, that never cared about SEO.

I myself have no interest in seo..i think its a big scam all brought on by google and the other search engines..nothing beats word of mouth hard work going to other sites and making friends with the site owners.

To type in something in google and your site coming up in the top 10-20 would be great(no doubt) and easy to find whatever your looking for but its awfully expensive because basically every key word would need to be added for it to come up in the top 10-20..so idk..i maybe way off track with this.

I think you are wrong in some ways. People never remember the site we say them, and they go search for the keywords in google and some other search engines. So SEO for a site is as important as adding content to that.
My simple algorithm for google is: If A and B are two sites, if A has a link to B, then It would be considered as a vote for the site A. So If you to other sites and link it to your site, then It would be considered as a vote for your site.

SEO involves lot of things such as Keyword snipping and Keyword stuffing,Creating quality original content. The aim of the site must be to educate the viewers and thereby aim for better
rankings.Eg-:Google,Yahoo etc.Keyword snipping is nothing but using the right keyword for better mileage and Keyword Stuffing is using irrelevant
keywords or repeating the set of keywords without any meaning.I am not giving a detailed explanation on SEO's and this is just a sample.

It is also counterproductive, as one risks a penalty by doing that.
