I have a friend interested in getting into providing free hosting.
What do you think is a good business model for providing free hosting?
What would bring customers that are likely to signup for a premium plan?
Looking for recommendations on plan specs and support, features, etcetera.

Try to do what Geocities does, put Ads on the sites so they will get tired of them and most probably they will upgrade their plan once they notice they webpage is important.

Depends. It should be stripped down if at all possible. I even mean like no FTP traffic, no Mail accounts except under the main domain if need be. 50 - 100MB space a gig or two of bandwidth.

It will take a admin to set it up correctly. Will need to strip down the CPanel theme used too.
