SMF - Best Free
vBulletin - Best Paid

IMO, you should start with SMF and move to vBulletin later on. There are migration tools that you can do that "easily".

PHPBB's new version really confuses novice people. SMF structure is still clean and very much user friendly.

You can start with SMF and while you grow there are many tools available to migrate to VB.

We never got into SMF but it seems to be quite popular.

We use to use phpBB a lot but we've fallen in love with vBulletin completely. The latest release is phenomenal.

Thanks.
VB for the more professional looks, but with each with enough time and skill sets you can do anything VB just has a better rank IMHO for out of the gate startups
