Hey I was just wondering how you get a little icon next to the URL. I noticed on hostingdiscussion and DemoDemo they have one. On HD its the signature check mark and on DD its the signature Question mark. How do you get these there?

You simply create a 16x16 image (fits for the address bar and for favorites) and save it as an ICO file with the name favicon.ico and upload it to your document root. You can also use 32x32, but it will get scaled down. I haven't tried any other sizes, but I think the 16x16 is your best bet.

I believe that if you save it as a gif and upload it, then change the extension to ico, it should still work.

EDIT: It worked, thanks for all the help, Jordan! Now only if I could get a decent image to fit in a 16x16 hehe.

Here are a few favicon editors:

http://www.microangelo.us/
http://www.iconcool.com/
http://www.hodder.cc/aprogramming.html
http://www.desktopfay.com/iconedit2/
http://www.icon-editor.net/

You can also find lots of info at http://www.favicon.com/ . They used to have a free online favicon editor. Not sure if it's still available.

BTW, after creating the favicon, and uploading it to your site, it may drive you crazy for a bit as you try to figure out why others can see your favicon and you can't. This drove me nuts for weeks. The issue has to do with cache.

There is a very long winded complicated process of emptying your cache several times to fix this. But instead of that, there's a much easier fix. After adding a favicon to your site, simply add your site to your Favorites. Doesn't matter if it's already in your Favorites. Add it again. Bingo, the favicon shows up.

Actually, Artashes, I was wondering about that comment by dubs. I have never noticed one on your site.

Oh, that one... Yeah, it doesn't really pop up too often.

It's strange, though. I still can't figure this out. Earlier, I stated that if you add your site to your favorites, you will see the favicon. This is true. However, if you then surf to any sub page, the favicon doesn't appear.

I get the same thing - I have no idea why. But if you drag the icon (or where the icon should be) into the window of the webpage, it will reload the page and will display the icon. So far, it has worked every time for me. Something to play around with, I suppose.
