Various different websites publish different popular hosting statistics. But we have created our own real statistics based on user’s own popular choices during February 2013
The principle of recording these statistics is very simple but at the same time very reliable -

1) We took list of 3,000,000 most popular websites on the internet. These are all sites on the internet being visited by 100+ people per day.
2) For each of these 3 million websites we found all those sites IP addresses. These websites use a total of 1,130,000+ IP addresses.
3) For each IP address we found the official registered IP owner and this consists of the hosting company who own the IP address on which those individual sites are based.
(Of course this excludes small hosting companies from the list who rent servers from big hosting companies and who afterwards re-sell hosting).
And we dynamically built statistics using these three million websites hosting information.

According to our statistics the most popular hosting in Feb 2013:
1) Softlayer Technologies Inc, 116,921 hosted sites
2) Godaddy.com LLC, 99,693 hosted sites
3) Google Inc, 94,811 hosted sites
4) Hostgator.com Llc, 92,928 hosted sites
5) Theplanet.com Internet Services, Inc (merged with Softlayer now), 74,015 hosted sites
6) Hetzner Online Ag, 65,338 hosted sites
7) Bluehost Inc, 63,078 hosted sites
8) Ovh Sas, 57,400 hosted sites
9) Rackspace Hosting, 41,721 hosted sites
10) Peer 1 Network Inc, USA, 35,092 hosted sites
11) 1&1 Internet Ag, Germany, 33,484 hosted sites
12) Peer1 Network Enterprises Limited, United Kingdom, 32,760 hosted sites
13) Amazon.com, 29,492 hosted sites
14) Sakura Internet Inc, Japan, 26,407 hosted sites
15) New Dream Network, LLC, 26,376 hosted sites
......

Full report attached.

-------------
Q: So since Hostgator is in Softlayer, are they counted twice?
A: Hostgator.com and Softlayer.com work under separate brands and have different hosting offers/sites/servers. They also supply companies registration information separately in the public whois systems for their ip address ranges. Therefore we calculate statistics for them separately.

This is more useful for people than if we unite different brands from one parent company.

We use only LIVE information from public Whois systems (RIPE/ARIN/KRNIC/AFRINIC/etc.), statistics is correct.

Analytics - BLACKLIST IP Addresses Live Database (Real-time, 25,000+ ip) - spam bots, unknown bots, etc.

At this time on the internet many unknown bot/spiders are masking as normal users. We have found an easy way to identify them. Our company have created a real time blacklist of IP addresses based on statistics held on the large websites which we operate.
This blacklist database was run nearly 6 months ago and at this moment nearly 25,000 + ip’s are contained in this list. It includes: Unknown Spam Bots masking as a normal users and also Majestic12 bots, Proximic bots, 80legs bots, Ahrefs bots, etc.
It works full in automatic mode and updates itself every hour. Also our own users have added various ip addresses to that blacklist. Please see in attachment fresh text file with blacklist ip.

According to our internal file download statistics at this moment our free IP Blacklist List in text file automatically downloads data on 500 companies/hosting providers every day from our website..
The top three user countries which have download our blacklist: USA/Germany/Israel.

Our unique protection system allow easy identification of the real visitors ip with any bots/crawlers ip addresses and other threats include unknown crawlers/bots masking themselves as normal users.

The operating principle of our protection system is very simple: We allow any user to browse 10 pages on any of our websites, and after system start to display free registration form on the website and to block all pages on website (i.e. visitor will see only free registration form on all pages). We ask visitors to freely register on site themselves or to revisit us after to 24 hours to browse other pages.

Crawlers/Bots ignore such instructions and they would try to continue crawling the website. Normal users can click links on the website also but he/she will see all the time registered page and after they have seen 10-20 pages they will stop. But Bots would continue crawler on the website even despite those displays. We count the use of the site. And after 100 requests to see different site pages with registration form and every time is displayed a registration form we can be 100% sure the visitor is a BOT, even if it is masking itself as a normal user.

If user agent line has no any identification of that bot and is masking itself as a normal user we will automatically add its IP to our blacklist. For example Google Bot have user agent:
Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html and not hide it.

Therefore our Blacklist of IPs addresses consists only of unknown crawlers/spam bots masking themselves as normal users and our Blacklist has no search crawlers like Google Bot, Yahoo Bot, Bing Bot and others which nobody has tried to mask as a normal real user.

We have not found on the internet a service of similar kind which creates a IP Addresses Blacklist of unknown dangerous crawlers / spam bots in real time so we hope you will found ours useful.

See in attachment text file with fresh blacklist ip.

I'm surprised that your report has SingleHop and 1&1 so far down the list.

So basically when you say Rackspace Hosting has 41,721 Total Websites hosted by the company, you're only referring to dedicated IP numbers, is that correct? And that 41,721 is of the top 3 million websites on the web right?

RE> that 41,721 is of the top 3 million websites on the web right? - that correct

RE> you're only referring to dedicated IP numbers ?
We calculate sharing hosting also

Example: ip: 184.106.55.51 (102 sites on ip) http://myip.ms/184.106.55.51

Full list of Rackspace IP Addresses - http://myip.ms/browse/comp_ip/1/ownerID/486/sort/6/Rackspace_Hosting_IP_Address_Database.html

Full list of website which we use in statisitcs here

Rackspace Ltd, UK 7,940 sites
Rackspace Cloud Servers, USA, 4,692 sites

Interesting. But I would like to stress that these are sites with over 100 visitors/day. If you include all sites, GoDaddy would probably be #1 and "most popular." They claim about 9,000,000 sites (about 100x more than the stats used)

Given this, apply it to the other hosts, we can infer that about 99% of websites get less than 100 visitors/day. Now consider that a portion of 100+ visitors sites are not using shared hosting, it follows that the proportion of sites on shared hosting plans getting less than 100 sites a day is over 99%

We can conclude that almost all sites on shared hosting plans are using far less than the resources they purchased. For those out there who are still unable to grasp such hosting concepts as overselling and "unlimited," this observation will probably escape you.
