Nothing wrong, I guess, with starting your first hosting experience with your own hosting company (if it was a reseller package, for example). However, it was just the phrasing that confused me: "my first host was this and that and NOW I own it".
normally in a whois record it will show

Creation Date: 17-Mar-2009
Expiration Date: 17-Mar-2013

which is the date of reg 17-Mar-2009 and the expiry date 17-Mar-2013

if the domain had changed hands/changed nameservers etc. then it would display like

Created On: 17-Mar-2009
Last Updated On: 12-June-2011
Expiration Date: 17-Mar-2013

but as it just shows

Creation Date: 17-Mar-2009
Expiration Date: 17-Mar-2013

this means the registrant and nameservers are the same as it was when the domain was first registered

true as a lot do this now
and his phrase
Quote:
"my first host was this and that and NOW I own it".
could be seen as self advertising

Isn't the "Last Updated" status mean when the domain was renewed?

no the "last updates" means this is the last time the domain record was updated with new/chaned information, either renewed, registrant/registrar change, nameserver change etc.

Our first host was Limitless Hosting and they are no longer in business. We moved to Echoservers who was great until the previous owner sold out to a different company. Since he sold out, we have been having some issues.

i think Echoservers is one of those hosting companies that rather than advertise they are selling they offer their business to a client of their after maybe the client states they are looking to expand or the company itself suggest they are thinking of selling and a client says they would purchase, but the client being just a basic reseller has no idea on how to run servers etc. a prime example of this type of sale is tophostinguk

No, that is not correct. I know the previous owner fairly well, and he knew his stuff. Very smart fellow and was always prompt on fixing things if there was ever an issue. However hosting was not his "full time day job", and I'm only speculating here, but it probably grew to the point that he was unable to give it the attention it deserved and sold it off to another company.

We have been with Echoservers for YEARS and have been pleased with the services up until the sale. After the sale is when we have started to have some issues.

no i am not on about the previous owners. i have seen many when previous owners ( like you state) the business grows and they cant commit as much time, so they sell up sometimes to other well brands, but a lot will just sell to one of their clients who dont have much knowledge in running servers etc. so problems start to arise

My very first provider was 1&1. I had a dedicated server hosting www.aqualityplace.co.uk a free email service powered by atmail

After a year or so I moved this to our own virtual platform hosted with RapidSwitch and from there we added more hosts until we moved the BlueSquare Maidenhead which is where we are now

not always. but mostly when you start in the web hosting business you will start as a reseller and then move to a master reseller and then onto a VPS then a dedicated serever.

Some hosts that offer reseller/master reseller do not offer VPS, so as your business grows you will need to move providers.

We started this was and had a great provider that we were using a master reseller, but then this host went belly up after being with them 4 years, so a year earlier than planned we decided to get our own VPS, at a rush as our MR losed down we made the wrong choice so after a few weeks we found the supplier we have our main server with now (5 years), we have 3 server with 3 different suppliers and at the moment we are in no rush to move to a dedicated server although our current suppliers provide these, so we could ungrade with min. problems for our clients.

if he had later purchased this then it would have shown a record updated date, which it does not so the domain has not changed hands since registered
I don't see how it is self advertising.
He answered the OP question directly.
I don't see any offer of services. I don't see any solicitation.

Question asked and answered. Time to move on.

In fact, since this member doesn't even have a signature set up he/she could easily argue that others here are more blatantly advertising their business with their replies.

This is a handy site for checking WHOIS history for changes - not conclusive, but it does keep record of WHOIS history for most domain names:
