Finding out who is the host

try dnsstuff.com -- we've been using it for years and they have a good set of tools at an economical cost + free trials (i think).

WHOIS the domain then when you get the IP go and check the IP information over at arin.net if the site is in America or US then if not you can check the IP information over at this site ripe.net

Most times this is the way for a person to check where a site is hosted and who the provider is. Clever way to be nosy.

Does nobody here use a Linux command line??:uhh:

whois
dig
traceroute
ping
host
nslookup
nmap
Correct use of these commands will tell you anything you need to know without the need of third party websites.

Why look for a Linux box when those commands will work in Windows too?

But seriously, some of the websites will do all or many of those in a single submission and present the results in a nice report

It's novel approach but you could try "asking" the host. Some smaller players don't want to admit that they're resellers of others but truth be told there is no shame in being a reseller or leasing a server from someone else.
