Increasing Traffic to a Common Topic Website

The only way I can word the question really is, how do you increase your traffic to your website (and keep the traffic) to a website if it's a common topic? For example I'm a gamer, and I've brought up the topic before of me building a large-scale video game site. It almost seems that as soon as you say, "I've got a site up! Come check it out!!" People come once or twice, then disappear forever.

Welcome to competition. Common topics are a tough nut to crack - at least in finding a niche that draws and retains traffic. I'd be doing keyword analysis everyday to determine what surfers are currently searching for, and integrate that into the site. That should at least increase the draw. Retaining traffic is more about providing value.

You should add a demo for the game which should be addictive also add games which are interesting because people are tired of playing the same game again and again.
