an addon domain is usually another top level domain on the same account, it is different from the domain you entered when signing up.

A sub domain is a part of the original domain that you entered when signing up.

you signed up for a webhosting account and you would like to have your site under the domain ""

a sub domain would then be ""
An addon domain would be ""

an addon domain is just as it says a domain that you have added to your account.
so rather than have say 4 domains with 4 separate control panels like

where you have to remember usernames and passwords for each you can simply have

and then add the other 3 domains as addon domains where you can control from the same control panel and same FTP etc.

a subdomain is simple a directory of the main domain

An addon domain is a functional domain that can be created from within your control panel or it is a domain that is added to your hosting account. To put it in simple way, think of it as having multiple hosting packages all sharing the same control panel where you create email, forwarders etc. - the same way you do for the main domain within your hosting account. In addition, addon domain will not function unless the domain name is registered with a valid registrar.

Whereas, Subdomain is the portion of a domain name. What's more, subdomains allows you to put content in your URL before your domain name, such as blog. or shop. For instance, if your domain name is, then the subdomain name could look something like this:

Did that make sense? If yes, Cheers!
