Fully Managed Servers

The term fully managed server seems to come with a lot of ambiguity. A managed server being offered at Company A might not feature the same service level as a managed server offered at Company B. So what is your understanding of fully managed sever and what does this cover?

Is it taking care of software upgrades and patches, fixing crashed servers, doing installations and pretty much anything so that the client's only worry is running their business? Or should the client have some responsability

It depends on each vendor's policy. I see many managed vendors advertisings, but it's not cover all aspects. Some of them just do when customer requests.

In case of true "fully managed" vendors, they should pro-active managing systems for customers, they know about troubles and can fix or at least keep communication with customers before customers can notice. Of course, customers might be still in charge of their scripts, but I know some big vendors serve their enterprise customers everything. It comes back to what you want to provide to your customers.

Normally web hosting companies have several things included in their managed servers plan, which will be done at their end. While selecting your new web host, make sure for the same and clear yourself.

Normally anything related to server is done by webs hosting company. Better to confirm and clear all your doubts before buying managed servers from any vendor.

Fully managed does indeed imply that the hosting company will take care of all your needs from installing and setting up to fixing and backing up your services.

Fully Managed server in my opinion means to support the base operating system and standard packages for example with Linux it would be the LAMP stack.

Yes the said company could support other third party software providing they feel confident in doing so, otherwise that would be down to the customer to support.

Fully managed server means the hosting provider is responsible for the regular backup, uptime monitoring and fix any kind of server problem.
But the hosting provider can create their own policy. So, the best way is, the clients have to be carefully read about the policy.

The definition varies and "Managed Hosting" futures different services, depending of the provider. The minimum requirements for a managed service on a physical dedicated server are "Initial set-up, IP management, OS installation and maintenance, Antivirus and Antispam installation, Reboots, System recovery, Control Panel updates, Resource monitoring".

Does not matter if you are on a managed service or not

Backups ARE NOT the responsibility of any host. The responsibility of backups is ALWAYS with the client. Even if you pay the host extra for backups it is still your responsibility to also make your own backups.

A true managed hosting vendor will do data backup automatically, even in different locations for disaster recovery. Clients are still recommended to have their own backup version.

Many "managed vendors" out there only do when customers ask. That are NOT true managed hosting vendors, they just advertise.

yes the clue is their disaster recovery this is for the hosts benefit and not for the client.

We do the same thing and backup every night to 2 different locations, but our clients have the option to pay £2 a month for backups, which would allow them to request a copy of a backup or for us to restore using a backup, if a client has not taken this option and request a copy of a backup or a backup restore then they will be charged a one off fee of £15.

it is 100% responsibility of the client to make their own backups

As part of our Managed Services upgrade for dedi servers and VPSs we offer our clients 50Gb off-site backup space.
We also throw 30 minutes of custom script and 3rd party software troubleshooting.
So you can't put a margin on "what a managed service includes". That depends from provider to provider.

I guess you never know how a true managed hosting vendor works. You can do whatever you want, just please don't disseminate wrong thoughts.

what are you on about it has ALWAYS been the clients full responsibility to make their own backups. even a FULLY MANAGED provider will charge a client for backups. i have several fully managed servers and when you sign up their will have the addon for backups.

I have been hosting for many years so know 100% what is involved and how these work.

Our fully managed VPS servers includes weekly backups and we can restore the entire server for the client on request.

Of course, the client can go one step further purchasing the R1soft addon we offer enabling them to restore individual files / folders / accounts.

basicly the client side dose not need to be concernd regarding all the of the about. the thing is when you are taking a fully managed services the Serevers Provider will be taking care of all of those issues:

normally software upgrades and patches, fixing crashed servers all of these are the responsibility of the provider services

Fully managed support means that hosting provider will handle any issue or configuration request you may have with your server outside of custom software/script installations. Some examples of things covered by fully managed support may include but are not limited to: Security audits, Load problems, Network related issues,Failure of server to boot, Hardware failures etc....
