I read in another forum that ICANN has just approved the (long awaited?) .xxx TLD. Is it time for adult websites to stop "polluting" .com TLD and move to .xxx? What do you think?

It is the time for adult websites to die once and for all, let alone get their own personal TLD. But I think this solution may be good as you said so they can stop polluting other TLDs. But that only stands if such sites are obligated to use only .xxx TLD.

.xxx TLD can give porn sites separate identity, if forced to use this TLD.

It also allows filters to more easily block them. My question is - who is going to regulate what constitutes porn - some of it is obvious, but some isn't. Where is the line drawn?

If ICANN isn't going to force pornographic websites to use the .xxx tld, and force current owners of pornographic .com tld's to move to .xxx, then it is absolutely pointless.

I've been waiting for quite some time for this, but as Plexihost said, if it's not enforced, it's wasted. There's so many TLDs these days that it's become a management nightmare. If anything it's now forced many companies to not only register their .com name, but also .net, .org, .biz, .us, .ca, .co.uk, .mobi and a slew of other names just so that their brand doesn't get tainted by some other person.

Enforcement will be key, but forcing users to use "xxx" as an extension will never work as the .com's will still be around (or will be snagged up by MLM's wanting some instant pagerank boosts.

Also, what Steve said is valid too. I personally don't constitute adult novelties as "pornographic" although others do. There's many a swimsuit picture that can be put into either category, but again, it all depends on who is making that call. Is seductive pornographic, or is it art? The line will become very blurred.

Time to make some good money

The new domain would help parents block the porn sites easily.

That is definitely a key benefit to having an .xxx tld IF pornographic sites are forced to use it.

Hi,

Yes, all porno specially those XXX must be forced to move to .xxx for this to be of good use.

It's a tough question. Some website owners proudly admit that theirs are porn websites, while the others are not happy with the categorizing. That's why I prefer to consider them adult websites.

Which is why it will be extremely difficult to what should be in the .xxx tld and what shouldn't. And as Steve mentioned, who regulates it and makes that decision?

There is a lot of confusion regarding .xxx and nobody seems to have really definitive info.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how it all works out when they actually make the extension available.

From what I know, the pre-acquisitions are opened.
I have reserved a lot of domains name in case this is gets official.

You should take a look into ICANN website.

Forcing sites to use the .xxx tld would be hard to regulate, there's so many cultural differences as to what is defined as adult content. Also, it's not like all the domain names that are already registered by adult sites will suddenly become available when they can register a .xxx, most would still keep their existing domain. I see the new .xxx tld as just another way for registrars to make money from existing adult sites.

.com is for company, if it is porn, then .xxx would be great idea.

Well, a set of rules for differentiation what is porn and what is not should be set, by some legal body. I presume that in the beginning it will be a lot of mistakes and "false flags" but I guess like any other skill and law it will see fine tuning after some time.
