Well as far as reselling goes, I think the average small business and webmaster who uses PHP-based open source solutions tends to look for Linux hosting due to the compatibility and use of the mod_rewrite function for SEO purposes so in this sense it's more appealing than Windows.

That's it exactly. Linux offers a world of PHP, PERL and other free language capability and the programs that run on them (try finding a Windows based discussion forum-most forums for example are in PHP)
It generally has fewer OS updates depending on the version.

Windows servers are like Windows PC's, lots of patches and proprietary software, If business clients are set up on Exchange, dot-NET, and other Microsoft solutions they require Windows servers and like everything else Microsoft is constantly making their "all in one" solutions more attractive in their plan to take over the world :shaky:

The next version of Office for example will contain many more features so the LA office an work on the same documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with the NY office easier than they do now---but you need those Windows servers :rolleyes2

For independent, powerful, database driven custom apps most will use Linux for the choices of programming languages and the generally lower cost of *nix hosting (Windows gets REAL expensive if you need MSSQL licenses- on *nix MySQL is free etc, )
Some people like the all-in-one of Windows solutions for their business communications; but they probably have their own IT and servers and won't need you. A few mid-sized businesses might.
The average guy-doesn't need it unless he uses Microsoft Expressions software to design his site.

I'm not following this. Sites designed with Microsoft Web Expression software can be hosted on Linux servers.

These aren't proprietary languages so even though your using a microsoft product, the product itself uses open source codes

Ir's depend your requirement. However, in Linux cPanel everything comes under one roof. Means site, database, email so for the host it easy to manage. From the user point of view it is easy to manage & cost wise cheaper as Linux is a free ware.

I think Linux provides a better stability and less resource intensive wise compared to Windows.

You really only need Windows when you use .asp or .net, other then that stick with Linux.

Each server has its own stability & structure. If you wish to go with MySQL, then MySQL-PHP combination will provide you ultimate performance in Linux only.

The answer would depend on what you wish to host and what software you wish to run. I think most providers would say Linux for webhosting, however Windows does have its place in the market.

Popularity is what counts - just as windows is more popular as a desktop OS than Mac OS and Linux.

Do you need Windows hosting or do you need Linux hosting (what are you using for programs/applications/etc.), also think about the cost factor. Do you want to pay more or less, or does the budget matter over the reason (price over need).

Windows defiantly does have its place in the market as there are many apps which need the windows servers. I personally prefer the linux platform for general web hosting though. Loads of options, good stability, and a number of other selling points.

The architecture of the linux makes it better than any operating system. also the open source nature of the Operating system is advantageous.

Each server has its own stability & structure.There are many application software which require Windows to run. If you are not going to use Microsoft proprietary software (Access, MS-SQL, ASP.NET) then go with Linux , as it is proven to be more reliable and secure.
