we tried many free live help scripts but in the end went with Stardevelop Live Help software and it is definitely worth it, we upgraded to the unlimited domains option which means we can now place our live help on any site we own which is very handy.

Is live chat really effective these days? With the exception of sales I can see support live chat to be a problem.

Bold Chat is fairly decent.

LivePerson is also a good alternative for paid chat software. But i honestly don't know how much it costs.

I used it when contacting my web hosting provider and noticed that it is a pretty well software and even supports SSL so that you can even send passwords through live chat system.
