Today an Apple iPad was revealed.

What do you think of this device? Honestly.

I've always liked Apple, but have never purchased one, primarily because of price. This does seem to fit a void, so it will have a special niche and will probably sell well. I won't be buying one though.

I think its a great device but I too am not going to buy one. With that kind of money I could upgrade my laptop.

It looks really cool, but I don't really have a need for it. Maybe that'll change when it gets its own apps.

I'm not an early adopter of things, mostly because I don't like paying price premiums. But I love to see new stuff hitting the market. One day, who knows, I may find the need and cost balance to be just right.

Its just a giant iPod Touch-without the benefit of making phone calls. There are no USB ports, no flash ability, and it would be awfully fragile.

I love my iPhone, but until there are more features like USB I won't be buying.

I personally don't have much use for it at the moment - my notebooks are what I like for now with a real keyboard etc etc, however I have a number of design buddies that are really excited about it. It means that no longer do they have to carry around their portfolio of design projects, binders, a notebook, etc. Instead they only need to bring the one device now and everything can be stored on it.

I think it has some great promise, and would like to get my hands on one for testing here soon, but I'm not holding my breath on that.

Battery life is going to be the big thing, and right now they're saying approx 10 hours of life. That's HUGE compared to my notebook! So we'll see.

What I found amazing is when I was watching the launch demo, is how well trained Steve Jobs thinks we are at his commands. Yes, you, me - everyone. In persuading the audience (that's us) he actually said this:

"This is the best browsing experience you've ever had."

This stuck in my brain as my personal self-esteem took a hit. I had no clue that my 25" screen provided me with a poorer experience, it almost made me want to vomit a little from the level of truth coming out of that smart man's mouth. But then he hit me with more honesty I didn't expect. In referring to typing on this giant tampon, Jobs said: "typing on this device is a dream come true". God damn, it, old man, why do you have to do us like that...

But talking about this device seriously, if its possible, here is what I think. It is ridiculous, limitless in its capabilities, and nothing new (check out Archos 9 PCTablet to understand why www.archos.com/products/nb/archos_9/). There is not a single need niche that it can fill, unless I am sitting on a sofa at home and too lazy to get my laptop to check my emails. For those particular moments in time, if the iPad is on the coffee table in front of me - it can serve its purpose. I am not going to talk on it, I am not going to take it to check my email on the bus, I am not going to take it to meetings, I am not going to even take it outside when the weather is not good - how can I type? On the back of a homeless person's back?

Someone posted this on the web, I thought it was spot on:

1. If this is a big iPhone – where are the phone capabilities?
2. If this is a mini netbook – where is the webcam / skype video?
3. If this is a mobile device – how come its so heavy?
4. If this is an on the go device – how come there is no GPS?
5. If this is a robust device – how come there is no multitasking?
6. If this is a web device – how come there is no Flash?

And I am sorry, its not an e-book reader material, unless the only book you read is Facebook. The whole point of e-books is e-ink technology that does not put a strain on your eyes. Kindle does that superbly with a device that's more mobile, more light and lasts up to 2 weeks on a single charge. This one goes up at most 10 hours.

In closing of my little reaction to this new Apple product, I leave you with this funny video:

No thanks. I'll pass on the over priced iPad offer. It does nothing for me.

I bought an iBook a few years back and never used it to any extent. It was neat when I first bought it as I never owned an Apple computer before. But once the novelty wore off, I went back to using my Linux desktop. And the iBook ended up being a rather expensive paper weight. I don't need another expensive paper weight from Apple.

Fuchi, a waste of money in my opinion! I wouldn't want to carry that around all day when I could have a iTouch or iPhone that does the same pretty much.

I'm not a big fan to be honest because it's just a giant iPod touch. You can't even call it a giant iPhone because it doesn't have all of the features of an iPhone.
