You guys doing 80 hours a week are crazy

I do around 40 hours work myself, the rest of the time is for enjoying life and spending time with my family.

These days, I generally am present 8-12 hours during the week and it varies on the weekend. That doesn't mean I'm working, that just means I'm present

I remember my 18 hour days, but we now have staff to take care of much of that. I now spend most of my day marketing and networking and attending conferences/events. I still have to put in the time, but I'm no longer doing what I was doing 10 or 15 years ago.

That doesn't necessarily mean that a user isn't available 24/7 to tackle client issues. It could be 40 cumulative hours per week.

Once again, I'll repeat:

That doesn't necessarily mean that a user isn't available 24/7 to tackle client issues. It could be 40 cumulative hours per week.

He can enjoy the time with his family all he wants. As long as he is there to take care of clients' issues when they need help (honouring the 24/7 support claim), as he says he does.

Have you considered the idea that he may have staff?

Yes but my comments was in general to his whole comments,

which saying "You guys doing 80 hours a week are crazy" which if you have staff will be crazy, but if you are a one man band then i dont think it is crazy if you want to provide a top notch service.

same as if you are a one name band it is crazy to only work a 40 hr week, but if you have staff then this is a normal week

If you are a one man band you cannot offer top notch service.
That is just the facts of the industry. Unless one creates a definition of top notch to suit their needs.

When I have been going for 11 years like you - I will probably be in spain sipping cocktails and not working a day in my life.

You know... many folks say use to work 12+ hours per day and the only reason is that it is fancy to say you work hard (I do not mean the guys who said so in this thread). It is a part of our business culture to claim that we work lot, even when we don't.

I must admit I really used to work 10 - 12 hours per day within the last 10 years, but not anymore. I'm happy that I was able to cut my working hours to 6- 8 per day on average! It works good and I keep to my schedule.

i have had staff in the past which meant i was working a normal week, but the staff i had become abusive to clients, so as i value my clients i got rid of staff i would rather work on my own. i do provide a top notch service to my clients, but i do but in the hours to do this. ever since a child i can sleep on only 2 hours and wake up fresh

That's what most of us have experienced - Good staff are hard to find but when you find them, look after them well.

Get them involved like it is their business too.

I must agree with what you have said.

I did have 1 that was promising after she come to me from a gov. training scheme, i was teaching here all aspects of the industry and i think i would have made her permanent after here training period ended. she was 3 months into here 12 months scheme contract and i gave here a lingerie website to look after from stock ordering to sorting dispatch , she was good with customers and generated sales. one day i have a meeting to attend so asked her to answer the phones etc while i was away. when i returned, she was no where to be seen, and here things were also gone, which was strange, i had a message from her training agency to say whe was not returning due to being verbally abused, so i called her agency and found out that one of my clients had called in with an issue ( this turned out to be a clients own fault issue) and when she told them i was at a meeting the client became very abusive to her and with her being only 17 she took it bad. i arranged a meeting with her and her training agency and found out what sort of abuse she was subjected too and told her the client would be terminated and even offered her and immediate full time position, but she would not accept.

I've been know for enduring 20 hours work sessions by the computer and it is no fun I can tell you, but I do love what I do and that's the only way to endure it. I'm in web design business.
