Hi all,

I am currently looking for a good dedicated host, and have been reading a lot of reviews + exploring the host websites....wow, it's really mine-field out there I have seen some shocking reviews of hosts like managed.com, AIT, nocster etc...

The problem is that I am looking on the cheap end of the hosting market (I hope to spend a max of $75 a month). At this time I have narrowed it down to 2 hosts:

Acunett: http://www.acunett.com/

EasySpeedy: https://easyspeedy.com/

Acunett seem to be very good from what I can make out - their forums are active + show the owners taking a daily interest in the business. They were quick to respond to my emails - and have offered me FreeBSD even though its not an operating system they usually provide on the cheap monthly dedicated servers. Their reviews on the net have also been very good.

EasySpeedy is a bit of a wildcard - I can not seem to find any reviews of them at all! but the site is very interesting...if you read their faq, it makes it sound tempting to sign up for 1 month just to see Their price is very low and the features you get sound excellent...but in a way, thats what worries me - it seems too good to be true

Does anyone have any experience with these two companies?

Thanks,
DaveUK

oh well...I guess no-one knows these companies. I eventually went with Layered Technologies as they had awesome reviews and great prices. I am waiting for my server to be setup at the moment - but so far I am very impressed, their support have been awesome and have done all they can to meet my server requirements.

I am still very interested to get more info on easyspeedy - does anyone know anything about them? I have emailed them, but I am yet to receive a reply (not a good sign) - but their service sounds very interesting.

If anyone is interested - easyspeedy.com did get back to me eventually! (their support took over 24 hours to reply to me). They linked me to these reviews of their service:

http://asterisk.xvoip.com/viewtopic...ight=easyspeedy
http://talk.org/mt-bin/mt-commentsreal.cgi?entry_id=333

Those reviews look good, but I am worried about how long it took support to get back to me. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has used this host

The link to one of your reviews doesn't work. Try doing it without the copy and paste.
The second one doesn't look like much of a review at all.
If that is their idea of a sales call I would ignore them.

Since you already decided to go with Layered Tech. it shouldn't matter much anyway.

If you have ANY concerns with a potential host, you just narrowed your search down by one. Even if 24 hour responses are not the norm for this particular host, it did happen and you can't be certain that it won't happen in the event that you truly need help. My advice (if you were to still be looking) would be to continue your search until you find a host that perfect for you. Host searching isn't really something that you can do in an hour. It may take weeks for you to feel comfortable making a decision.

agreed

The other review was:

http://asterisk.xvoip.com/viewtopic....ght=easyspeedy

I did a lot of research before deciding on my host, and would recommend everyone to do the same (sadly, there are just too many bad hosts out there). I eventually went with: http://www.layeredtech.com/ and I have been very impressed so far!

If it helps, in my experience the hosts I would say to *avoid* would be:

AIT - www.aitcom.net (just search google or see aitsucks.com for reasons)

APlus - www.aplus.net (read some terrible reviews about billing problems and support, and when I spoke to the support team I got the feeling they were just saying what I wanted to hear in order to get me signed up)

CyrixWeb - www.cyrixweb.net (awful support imho, and I had to argue with them for over a month just to get the 30-day refund I was entitled to).

Dear all,

I started renting a dedicated server from EasySpeedy in May 2006.

My server was often off-line and did not respond to remote control panel.
They do not read support tickets, also for hardware/network problems, during the night or weekend.
As they don't discover the problem autonomously, they leave your server down for days. The customer cannot put his hands on his server to fix the problem, so it is not a responsible and professional behaviour to leave the customer alone till next working day. I cannot describe the terrible feeling I experience whenever the remote interface fails to control the server and I cannot get it up and running (no reboot, no reinstall, no hardware reset possible) until they decide to give me help during normal working hours. In my opinion such a service is not reliable for business that requires that your server is up during week-end or during the night.
It happens to me so often that I can' go on this way.

I am now looking for an alternative with basic 24/7/365 support (to ensure access to the machine at least) and reading of support tickets at anytime (at least to understand that something wrong is happening).

I just discovered http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/dedicated...emote-control/

They offer a control panel with full remote access (that should show the remote server's desktop screen).

I have no experience with them, but their solution seems interesting.

They say they have 24/7 email and phone support (as it normal to expect having a remoted machine).

Thanks,

Pier

Acunett is in a good datacenter and Ronny is a good guy. They are definitely a good choice.

You are not the only one Piermati. I have seen a lot of threads similar to this in WHT.

You shouldn't always believe everything posted on WHT WHT is probably the only web hosting forum which can easily be compared to a Tabloid Newspaper i.e. The Sun. The stuff I did find on Acunett that was bad are a couple months old.

Perhaps you are right. But if the threads I found in WHT say the same things as the ones here, there is indeed a reason to believe what has been said before by previous customers.
