Anything that mean OpenSource are free. cPanel is not opensource, so opensource products are affordable in this case.

There are many open source panel available to choose from, zPanel, Webmin, Kloxo, etc.

There are plenty of options available to use; search on Google properly to know more about them. However, some of them might not have updated in ages so make sure to pick open source control panel wisely. Check the following thread you will see how many option you already have. Note: The thread is old so you need to do some research on each control panel mentioned there:

Are you looking for an open source solution for its ability to be tweaked and reworked to your liking or simply because it would likely be free to use?

If its the money you are worried about its probably best to really look at the of the costs you'd incur using a paid solution. You will likely find that the cost don't outweigh the benefits of a well established, stable, and full featured control panel application.

We typically support/offer the following ranging from free to fee...

Webmin FREE
Direct Admin which has a monthly and a lifetime version for a small fee
cPanel which is fee based only

While the first two are way more affordable they are not as feature rich.

At this moment the best opensource control is zPanel. You gotta still understand that all the free control panel are going to be filled with bug than their counter partners.

It looks a good idea to get it free until you have to grow into something bigger. Its at that point you will wish you had paid a little money to stay with cpanel. That said I have used Zpanel and it gets the job done very well. Centos-web panel is also good enough.

Seriously though, whilst ZPanel and VirtualMin are capable panels, the few dollars you spend on a decent purchased panel wil reap benefits with your customers, as you have someone you can lean on for support if you need to.
Not to mention that even the Free billing systems have better support for the paid for panels.
For a few dollars a month, you will easily be able to automate everything you need, and get selling rather than working out how your gonna do it.

OP i suggest you to give Virtualmin a try. The UI is better than zPanel security-wise but works quite well. I know it will take a little time to get used to but once you get a hold of it you will fly.
