You're correct in that to be leaders in the market, web hosting providers must continue to be innovative. Complacency not only hinders growth, but can ultimately be the demise of a business. Do you necessarily have to be unique? Not really - you just have to execute on your plan better than your competition.

Try to keep up with emerging trends to see what you can be an early adopter of, such as how you list SSD hosting and CDN services. SSD is quickly becoming the standard, but a few years ago, being an early adopter should have definitely lead to increased sales if you were marketing that correctly.

Often times, you will see the needs of early customers lead to specializing in a certain niche, then word of mouth from them can help you grow. So it's important to pay attention to what your customers are asking for.

As to current areas where web hosts can try to look for growth, here are some, in no particular order. I think specialized CMS and ecommerce hosting still has some good growth areas, such as Wordpress + Woocommerce, Joomla, Magento, etc, niche focused hosting that is optimized for those CMS platforms. Turnkey e-com systems like Shopify and BigCommerce type sites, will continue to be popular, but, harder for the average hoster to jump into. The cloud sector will continue to mature and grow, it will be interesting to see which management systems take hold in that sector, and it's expensive to jump into correctly. The opportunity here is for those larger hosts that will specialize in providing private turnkey cloud systems. I think there is still good growth in remote backup services. Those that can truly provide good managed service should see solid growth if they can figure out the marketing side as well, and stay lean while they grow, as having top level techs 24/7 is not cheap. And while this one may sound self serving, there are solid numbers behind it, the CDN sector is estimated to grow by 30% annually through 2021, going from being just under a $5 billion per year sector in 2015 to an estimated $23 billion sector by 2021. You will start to see more hosts offering all inclusive business/ecommerce plans with CDN traffic, global DNS, remote backup service, etc, built into the plans as competition grows to get and maintain clients. I also think this period over the next 5 years will continue to see the trend of upper mid-sized and larger web hosts looking to grow through acquisition as opposed to spending money on advertising and marketing campaigns, as returns on the money trying to grow that way is tightening up and they see acquisition being a more cost effective way to grow. If you are a small to lower mid-sized host right now, and you can stay focused on what is working well for you, grow in that area, tighten up your financials and optimize your operating costs you could be in good shape to sell over the next few years.

Webhosting industry is booming nowadays and also the market place is busy and very competitive , anyhow new companies are emerging all days because of their interest in this business and the business is purely onlne.

SSD , DDos are common in these days and all the companies are providing those services , even they give SSL as free by the help of Cpanel and even cloudflare. So , how to be a leader in this platform.

Not any magic , but making good advertisements( leaders are spending much money in ads ) and being active in forums and make good blogs ,

Moreover , being nice to customers and give good support , make them happy. You know , if you give good service , they recommend our company to their friends, relatives . Reference is also an important aspect

We've seen many of our customers come back from VPS hosting to what we originally called "Premium Hosting", but has now been re-branded with the industry' new common name "Elastic-Sites".

By using servers with RAID 10 SSD accelerated SAS drives with a minimum of 32 CPU cores when your "Standard Shared" hosting doesn't provide the resources you need, we can upgrade you to accounts that have up to 8 CPU Cores. (We can go bigger if necessary, but not on a monthly contract).

A recent industry survey shows that 66% of people who upgrade to a VPS did so to obtain greater resources. The same data shows that 50% of those upgrading purely for more resources have churned within the following 3 months.
Most people don't want the hassle of managing a VPS, and that's where "Elastic-Sites" come in.
I think that "Elastic-Sites" will take off over the next 12-18 months.

UnixGuru: Accounts with 1-20 CPU Cores, 2-40GB RAM. Why use a VPS?

You can't do innovation unless you earn enough money and you have a free time.

I don't think any hosting company who is even well established have a time for innovation, Instead If they will advertise then they can earn more money.

I think new company or people who wish to open a hosting company can do innovation because of they have a time while established company think that wasting time means you are losing money.

I was did some innovation in starting but now I don't have a time for innovation.

Even simple changes in our hosting service can be called innovation like If everyone provide PHP 5.5 with cPanel and you found a way to provide multiple option then it can be called innovation.

@Colombiawebs Would you please save us some cheap conclusions. There are not "millions of hosting companies in the world", those are most probably then thousands. Speaking about innovation, you'd better clarify what do you mean and which is the hosting niche were you would "innovate". Shared Hosting is standards' based niche so innovation is a way to improve certain things inside the market niche. It is totally different in other markets. A company would still innovate on the Cloud.

I visited a members site that posted in this thread, to read about Elastic sites, as it sounded like a nice innovative solution between Shared Hosting and VPS. But i found something actually very innovative, for humans, on their hosting site. I want to say thank you very much for doing this. If i am off topic, so be it.
