While a number of them are nothing more than "sugar coated" standard hosting plans. There are companies that specialize in this application, provides a platform designed for this application, and/or hardware level tuning done for this application. To name a few things.

I try to be an unbiased as possible, but for all hosts Wordpress makes up about 90% of their business on shared hosting, but look for hosts with the following.

1. LiteSpeed Webserver (They have a native Wordpress cache, which beats anything else), they also have bruteforce protection built into the webserver.
2. A good backup service. No matter what security your host adds, old code will eventually get compromised, so that single plugin that never got updated will be your downfall.
Nothing lets me sleep at night more than knowing that I can restore my site back to before the hack and then fix.
3. Some security. We prefer Imunify360 or BitNinja with Comodo WAF, but mod_sec with Comodo, OWASP or Atomic rulesets at a minimum.
4. A service where the host hasn't switched off the CP backup options, so you can always take your business elsewhere if you have issues.

5. THE MOST IMPORTANT, WHICH PEOPLE SEEM TO IGNORE: Always keep your WP and plugins upto date. If WP release an update then install the update and dont think, well my site is working so dont need to update it.

When you say wordpress hosting, are you looking for an account with wordpress already setup and managed? I feel like this is a more targeted market. If you aren't looking for it to be managed, as long as you are using a shared account on a server that is optimized for wordpress, you will be fine. Look out for litespeed+litespeed cache.

There are lots of Wordpress hosting specialists out there. I would do some home work on whoever you choose and see what others are saying before jumping in

Shared hosting is the best solution for WordPress websites.
It helps to install and manage WordPress, backup and possible to switch easily hosting provider. If you do not have control panel such things difficult to manage. I would suggest searching managed shared hosting rather than WordPress hosting.

there are many goo wordpress providers out there. The best advice I can give is to say "look what people are saying" the best way of finding a decent web hosting is listening to what people are saying about them on the web

Try wpengine these have always been good for us

The best provider is the one that fit your need and fulfill your request. Like what others said you should go with shared hosting instead of wordpress, you got to do comparison on the package that the provider provide and also you got to know where the provider server is. Because it will somehow affect the speed on your website, the best is that the server is at your most target audience location or most website visitors location.

Good Luck!

I may suggest to use a shared hosting service than using wordpress' one. Because with a shared hosting, you can run several CMS like wordpress, joomla, drupal etc... But instead on wordpress' one, you can run only wordpress. More over, if you want optimization, you can do it yourself in your configuration.

If you are still starting, just go for a shared hosting ... you can upgrade to a vps later on if you have already enough visitors....
