Correct me if I am wrong, but I think google tends to ignore meta tags although is always good to have them.
Another good thing is to put main keywords within <h1> (top <h1> of the page best) and <title> tags. If you are not happy with the default look of h1 headings, use css to customize it. Using same css file on all of your website pages will also have an influence on search engines as avoids repetetive and redundant formatting tags being placed all over your site.
If external links that link to your website have keywords, your site will be better ranked by search engines, but be careful and don't abuse it as you can also get penalized. A clear example on this last one is the "miserable failure" search on google...
