Do you use Contact Management Software to manage your pre-sales process, from recording mailings and logging calls to setting up meetings - and tracking progress? Or do you use a card filing or folder system to separate 30, 60 and 90 day prospects? Or do you have post-its stuck all over your wall?

Would WHMCS be a CMS? I think so. That is what I use for support, billing, emails stuff sometimes etc...

Are you talking about the functionality of WHMCS- the client Management, Billing & Support System?

No, I was looking for a pre-sales CMS that's geared more to managing sales funnels.

I'd consider it some type of "lead management system".
I don't use one, but I know a friend of mine did develop his own for sales leads(completely different industry) and so I expect many operating on a larger scale would.

I'm using IntraISP, but have used ACT and found it easy to customize.

Gmail actually works rather well with the right tagging. The emails are collected in the address book and can create groups for them.
Dates are be linked to calendar.

Actually, this interests me greatly. Could you please explain in more detail what you mean by "dates can be linked to calendar" part? Can you also give an example of how you use labels to customize that/groups/whatever it is you do?

For the past couple of years I have been looking around for a nice and light contact management application to use. I receive a lot of emails and it would be fantastic to be able to classify each contact in its own group. I looked at ACT and some web-based scripts, at some point I wanted to build a custom solution, but then what a headache that is!

I recently switched to Gmail completely (also voted for it against any paid solutions I looked at - and I looked at many of them!!), so it simplifies my communication and it is accessible from anywhere. I am now learning more about Gmail and its capabilities, I use labels for each main subject/topic/website so its easier to navigate, BUT I would love to learn how it can be customized to help with contact management as well.
