Not just a law thing but it's also a moral thing as well.

The British Broadcasting Corporation announced last week that it has suspended all phone-in-competitions.

I should add that this link specifically states that it does not cover Internet sweepstakes, but as those laws are not fully developed, marketing departments on the whole continue to follow these laws when conducting a sweepstakes online. It's just good business and it helps protect your company from civil litigation.

And you're right about the moral part, Marks! I couldn't sleep at night if I did something like that.

the free gift given is great marketing but it will also eat up your revenue for a year i guess. A long term strategy.
