We've been mostly using Dells which are solid, reliable and fast (although quite expensive). We also use another supplier called Fairchild (http://*********), which are much cheaper than Dell but great quality - i don't have any affiliation with them just buy servers from them. They custom build them to your exact spec. Quite a few hosts are starting to use them.

Can't stand Raqs - Personal opinion as they have let me down big time in the past.

I'm not a big fan of RAQs as well. I'll look into Fairchild.

I dont like RAQ's

We buy the parts and build them ourselves that way you know the hardware is reliable and we configure the software from scratch.

Its slightly more expensive but at the end of the day its worth it as it keeps the customer happy (v.little downtime) which will keep them happy, and recommend you to friends and family

Yeh - we configure the software from scratch every time too - i don't think i have come across a single supplier that can install an OS as it should be installed for web hosting - they always seem to get something fundamental wrong.

There are different categories of servers.

For general hosting, we have found Supermicro's to be good.

However, people like Sun make some very high end servers ($3 million+) which target a different market...

I would recommend companies that custom build there own servers over companies who purchase pre-built servers. Usually servers are built custom for more stability & power while other companies custom build there own servers to significantly lower there overhead costs.

Like Mark said, Dell are very good. They are quality, reliable and really powerful - however, as he said too, the price is a bit different. RackShack and also Nocster sells Dell servers. Very good response from all clients who've used them.
However of course - one would expect that the big names like Dell, HP, and so on to be good as well.

Although - if you want to purchase some good quality servers, at a cheap price, then I recommend checking out FeaturedServers. Their prices are very good, and their equipment is quality too. Lots of good comments about them, and lots of people on WebHostingTalk actually use them.

ColoMachine is selling various 1U servers at below wholesale pricing. (bulk pricing). You might want to check them out. The qualities of their 1U boxes are un-matched. I haven't been able to seen any vendor match their product quality and price yet.

The only complain I have on them is they are often out-of-stock on their 1U boxes.

I have always been a fan of Dell's rack servers (along with a high level support contract). Investing in good hardware is just another piece of the puzzle that let's you sleep at night.

07-20-2002, that's when the guy first posted this message. I'm sure he's found his hardware by now.

We custom build our servers from scratch now. Obtaining the parts and making sure everything is working properly by our Techs makes us more at ease than building something pre-built not knowing what checks they made to ensure the system is working properly.
